General Overview

Participates in all assigned training to qualify the incumbent for advancement to the position of Ranger.

  • Completes field training program.  During field training, assists Ranger personnel to include patrolling assigned area by car, on foot, or other means to prevent crime or disturbance of peace and to maintain and uphold the law according the statute, ordinance, etc.  Appears in court of law if necessary.
  • Participates in police investigations, gathers and preserves evidence, takes fingerprints and completes related reports.
  • Assists other law enforcement personnel as directed by supervision and policy.  Develops and maintains effective working relationships with personnel of other agencies.
  • Conducts research and assists in the maintenance of records.
  • Cleans and services assigned patrol vehicle according to procedures.  Notifies supervisor of mechanical and equipment problems.
  • Develops skill and proficiency in the use and care of firearms.  Cleans and checks weapons and emergency response equipment at the beginning of each shift.  Obtains weapons qualifications in accordance with department policies and standards.
  • Develops knowledge and gains proficiency in the interpretation of Federal, State and local laws and ordinances.
  • Becomes knowledgeable in criminal law, investigation and crime prevention methods.
  • Becomes knowledgeable in departmental rules and regulations.
  • Becomes knowledgeable in first aid, CPR and emergency rescue techniques.
  • Obtains First Aid/Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)/Automatic External Defibrillator (AED) certification.
  • Obtains National Incident Management System (NIMS) certification.
  • Successfully completes Boating Safety and Marine Safety Enforcement Officer training.

Minimum Qualifications

One or more years of experience in public safety or law enforcement.

Successful completion of Basic Peace Officer Academy

Driver's license

Must be eligible to and immediately obtain Basic TCOLE Peace Officer License

Requires successful completion of fitness for duty examination upon hire, and annually thereafter

 Successful completion of new hire and periodic Public Safety departmental background check
