General Overview

Supervises, coordinates and directs the activities of a team of safety specialists. Provides safety leadership and serves as the point of contact for business unit management on safety-related issues. This position will also perform the work of a safety specialist.


  • Provides leadership and direction to staff. Hires, trains, assigns work, evaluates and manages performance, determines compensation of subordinate staff in compliance with policy and handles all aspects of staff supervision.
  • Provides safety consultation and serves as a safety and health resource for LCRA staff. Provides guidance regarding worker’s compensation reporting and other safety reports.
  • Develops, coordinates and conducts safety orientations, safety training, health training and monthly / quarterly safety meetings. Maintains training records.
  • Performs safety and health inspections and audits.
  • Leads and performs complex incident investigations, including documentation, tracking and reporting. May assist with LCRA investigations of large-scale incidents.  
  • Serves as a key contributor to research, development and implementation of safety policies and procedures.
  • Provides health- and safety-related project support. Prepares health and safety plans for LCRA projects.
  • Reviews and analyzes trends and deviations from LCRA policy. Prepares reports and makes recommendations regarding corrective actions.
  • Maintains knowledge of industry standards and regulations. Makes recommendations regarding the adoption and implementation of new policies.
  • Leads and coordinates the development and/or enhancements of internal safety manuals.
  • May coordinate medical monitoring activities and schedule employees for testing.
  • Performs work by traveling independently or with other staff to various locations (substations, power plants, water systems, etc.) as scheduled.

Minimum Qualifications

Nine or more years of experience in industrial safety and/or health programs, utility industry (mechanical and/or electrical), safety training or compliance including providing guidance, leadership or formal/informal instruction to staff.  A degree(s) in industrial maintenance, instrumentation, controls, electrical systems, health and safety, education, or relevant field may be substituted per LCRA guidelines for certain years of experience.
